Petra

Today we explored the ancient city of Petra. Major sites included the baths, markets, treasury, the templeof the Winged lions, the Corinthian tomb and the Palace tomb.
Petra has only one very narrow entrance in and out, called the "Siq", which could easily be defended against attack by an invading army.
The City of Petra was actually carved right out of the mountainside between 800 BC and 100 AD by Nabatean Arab.
What impresses one most about this amazing place is the shear size of it!! Everyone looks like little play toys against the backdrop of the immense ornate carvings.
We climbed straight up over 850 steps to the top to visit a hidden monastery and a tomb. From up there you could see hundreds of miles in every direction. We met many people along the way who actually live in caves on these mountain tops year round.
After spending all day exploring this site, we all cooked our own meals at an official Jordanian restaurant. YUM! Such a great bonding experience for everyone on the tour.

I took over 300 pictures today! i will get them sorted and post them tomorow as we head to Jerash.
